Rear Bumper

OK this should be an easy one. My 72 post L came without the rear bumper installed (it's in pretty bad shape). I was looking for a replacement, but then checked the fit of the old one. My car has a mindspring exhaust systen with the rear tips coming out with an upward slant, the bumper won't fit correctly.
the questions I have are;
Are modifications necc. to the body to put on pre-L bumperetts (sic?)?
Has anyone cut a V in the tailpipes to fold the muffelors/tips down horizontal, then weld the new seam?; I know the previous idea is ugly, hence my next question.
Is a mindspring exhaust system to valuable to cobble like I am suggesting??
P.S. I reallllly like the sound of the mindspring system!
