rear pads

I have my wheels of and noticed that one of the rear pads was thin. I removed the clip and slid the old ones out. The new ones are too thick to fit on both sides of the rotor. I released the bleed valve and squeezed with a 8 in. channel lock. Do I have to remove the caliper?
