Been there, tried that. The trim won't go in along the full length of the piece no matter what I lube it with, no way, no how.
I like the chrome look of the original trim, and the windshield looks a little incongruous with out it. I used black strip caulk on both the body side and the glass side of the gasket so I don't anticipate any leaks, however I suppose you're right about wanting to prevent water from laying between the gasket and the body.
Do you know of a glass shop near me that I could trust with my $750 windshield?
