Replacement speedometer lubrication

I am having to replace my speedometer cable for the 2nd time in 3 years. OEM replacement in a 73 model. Its ticking/sticking/jumping...especially at low speeds.

I know that I need to keep a gentle arc in the cable. Should I pre-lubricate it? With what lubricant...graphite?
