If I recall correctly, the port on the metering block (side of carb) should be connect to the distributor. That is the sense port.

Too much retard reduces high RPM power as the spark occurs too far after the piston passes TDC. This you might feel from the butt dyno. Too much redard could also cause the engine to run hotter.
