I went through this ordeal a few months back (you might want to search some posts w/ my name on it, I don't post here often). Anyway this job is obviously time-consuming but is very doable. I was able to extract the broken drive gear w/ the trans in the car but save yourself the trouble and just pull the trans out (b/c my linkage wouldn't go back together properly w/ the trans in the car). Put it in neutral - before disassembly - and pull the back half of the case off (the trans assembly), leave the differential assembly intact. You should be able to extract the gear and bolt everything back together. I had a tough time getting the linkage to stay in place, but with enough patience you can get it all back in place (might have to loosen the shift forks).

It's not as scary as some would lead you to believe. Lloyd is also an expert if you want good advice over the phone.
