I think its mostly a cosmetic mod. I welded mine up on the restoration for looks. However, while I was in there I welded in some 2x4 box tubing for stiffening. My entire roll cage ties into those tubes. Easy thing to do with the rocker panels off. Adds a tad bit of weight though.
