A friend departed, who raced in the big leagues ( Trans am ) did run a restrict-or washer instead of a thermostat, he shared your thought.
He never had a problem, he lived in orange county Ca. His car was heavily modified. I can't remember if he blocked of the re-circulation passage, but Garth has a point.
