Is it surface rust? Is the tank rusted-through? You may be able to save it. How long has the car been sitting? Although pulling the motor for the sole reason of replacing the gas tank sucks, if the car has been sitting, there's most likely many other pieces that need attending to, and pulling the engine will make the procedure easier.
