Hi Ron, The pliers turn in only one direction is true, you have to manually twist to the left...but the reason for doing the right twist-left twist in the pattern is to hold the loop tightly to the fastner. In a two bolt pattern the intial right hand twist forces the wire loop on the head of the bolt towards the base of the fastner. When you do the left hand twist for the pigtail it forces the loop towards the base again since it is going opposite of the first loop.
