Seat belt retractor spring

While replacing the break prone plastic seat belt guide, I had to disassemble the retractor assembly. I'm having trouble trying to wind the spring back and install it in it's cover. It's kind of confusing because the spring winds in two directions. I'm on an hour and a half trying to figure it out.
