seating rings

I built a 350 Chebby, and like a dumb ass I filled the new motor with Mobil 1. That sucker smoked from day one. I changed the oil to a petro base and drove it a couple thousand miles and it still smoked. An old timer told me that he was working at the dealership when the 55 chevy's came out. Acording to him,the new 327 was prone to using oil.He aid the factory sent out advisory to pour a can of Bon Amie down the carb while running to lighty seat the rings. Bon Amie is like Comet or Ajax. You rekon' he is full of @#it, or will it work?
