Not full of sh*&. I have done it, it works. I rebuild a 350 chev in a Vette I owned and used molly rings but failed to properly hone the cylinders enough. Smoked like an old lady at bingo.
Thought I had not much to loose, so I reved it to 2000 rpm and slowly dumped a tablespoon of comet down each side of the carb. Dumping it too fast kills the engine. Then Drove it for 5 miles. After than I changed the oil. The change was immediate. It showed no smoke at all. Went from a quart a week to not burning oil at all. Not sure how much I reduced the life, but it ran fine the two years I owned it.
