Second try on alternator question.

I posted something earlier but it seems to not have made it, so I will try again.
I am wondering if the new alternator I installed recently was actually working correctly and I was just expecting the gauge to read as before. This is with a replacement for the GM higher output alternator. This is what was on the car so I replaced it with the same. One of the bearings was going so I decided it was best to just replace instead of trying to replace the bearing. On installation and starting the car I did not see the ammeter move, even when turning on the fans (mine are on a switch). With the old alternator the gauge would jump to charging when the fans were on.
Is it possible that the newer alternator is working better and supplying all the current needed? I am not an expert on car electrical systems so any suggestions or opinions are acceptable. Thanks.
