Reply to "Serial Number"

After looking at Chuck's site, this leaves me with some confusion. He notes in his example that the serial number ending in 3381, is the thirty three hundred and eighty first car that came off the assembly line. I feel pretty certain that I have seen on this bulletin board, a note that claims that serial #'s started at 1001. That would make his example car, number 2380. Can anybody confirm this?
