Shock Replacement - Do I Need A Spring Compressor?

I wondered what is the best way to replace a set of shocks. Do I need to compress the springs to get them out?

Will Spring Compressors work while the (Front) shock is in the suspension - really, is there enough room for access? Or does the suspension get disassembled?
