speedo cable lube

Around 30-40 mph my speedo used to jump in time with a tic noise under the dash, which I took to be the drive cable having a hard time spinning through the 180 degree sweep in the footwell.
I pulled out the speedo cable, it was dirty and pretty dry. I cleaned it and flushed out the sheath. I guess it should've been obvious but gosh is that thing long!
What is the preferred lube for the cable and sheath? Transmission lube seems a bit thick. I was going to use a squirt oiler and pump maybe a 20w or 30w synthetic oil into the sheath to lighten the drag and therefore reduce the torque needed to spin the cable (and kill the tic noise).
