Speedo gear drive

The speedometer on my 72 has not worked since I bought the car. The output drive shaft from the angle drive on the trany could spin freely by hand. I pulled it from the transmission and did not hear the failing of a drive gear or shaft. The angle drive feels the same out of the trans as it did before removal. I am guessing the shaft is missing or previously dropped into the trany.
Can anyone tell me what the shaft or gear looks like. Does it have a pilot shaft at its end to position it into the trasmission correctly? How does it install? Looks like it must be sloted on the top end to engage the angle drive.

I have seen one post saying don't drive until it is recovered and another saying its ok to drive. Any thoughts?
