Speedo Quit

At some point in my trip to Reno my speedo quit working. I've checked the connection at the guage and it is tight. Pulled the cable off the ZF and spun it with a drill. Nothing. Are there gears inside the speedo guage that can break? If it is inside the guage is it worth repairing or should I just get a set of modern guages and swap them out?
