Jay,

Just to be clear, the gas tank still has a heat shield that wraps around to the rear of the gas tank, which acts as a stone shield.

This shield stops at the top of the gas tank, leaving a huge opening for rocks, water, and debris (kicked up by the tire) to collect between the gas tank and the body.
