Reply to "steering rack"

To remove a rack, first unfasten the steering shaft coupling bolt & separate the shaft from rack. Second, unfasten the steering rods to the wheels, either by selective pounding on the steering-arm sides, or by using a 'pickle-fork' spreader. Finally, the rack is bolted to the body with 4 bolts thru split rack-clamps. Once out, the bush is on the passenger side. Pulling a rack is an hour's job; rebuilding it may take an afternoon if nothing awful goes wrong. If you're handy, adding two home-made 1/4" thick aluminum or steel shims between the rack clamps & the body will reduce the amount of bump-steer your car experiences. Don't forget to add 1/4" longer rack bolts & get the wheels aligned if you do this.
