Steering wheel movement

I have a friend that has a '74 Pantera.

When I test-drove his car, I noticed I could push on the steering wheel and move it in and out about 1/2"? Is that supposed to do that? My '72 doesn't do that.

The linkage to the steering rack is tight and no movement on the steering u-joints.
