Stock valve cover questions.

I have noticed some differences with the OEM valve covers, The orange Ford parts catalog clearly shows the passenger side valve cover having a grommet and a plastic elbow connected to the air cleaner via a hose. On the driver's side the illustration shows a metal fitting with a grommet accommodating the pvc valve. My concern here is that despite what the illustration shows, I have seen this metal fitting outfitted on the passenger side valve cover. Was this variation something that occurred in normal production?
