Testing fuel sending unit

My fuel gauge quite working on my 1972 Pantera. removed the fuel sending unit from the gas tank. removed the small plastic inspection cover and the internals of the unit appear to be fine. Is there a proper procedure with an ohm meter to check for proper current, resistance??, of the unit. Thanks in advance for all input and advice.....Mark.
