Reply to "The case of the missing rod bearing..."

I was curious about the color because when I tore down a 302 with 156K on the clock that had always used Pennzoil, it was very clean inside, but it had the same reddish tint that was shown in your pictures. Even at 156K, the 302 did not have any blowby and the crank looked like new even though the bearings were in the copper.

I have seen a similar failure where the bearings went away in an MG. But in this engine, ALL bearings went away. Crank, Rod, and even Cam. Well, they did not go away, but all the bagget and copper flaked off and was thrown against the block. Eventually the engine threw a rod. No advanced warning at all. We never did find out what caused it.
