I'm aware of the GTM and saw one on show at Monterey in 2007. For me it didn't evoke the same 'rawness' that the Ultima has, nor does it hold the same performance records i.e. 0-60 in 2.6 secs (that's 3rd fastest behind the Bugatti Veyron and Ultimate Areo TT) and a World record holding 0-100-0 in 8.9 secs.
The GTM also still requires a 'donor' vehicle i.e. C5 Corvette, whereas the Ultima is a 'component' vehicle with all parts specifically manufactured for the car.
Admittedly a GTM would be about 1/3 the cost of an Ultima to build. But, I do not have time for a self build, so a 'built' car was important. If I had been considering a component car to build then the RCR (Race Car Replicas) Superlite Coupe is probably a good US contender against the Ultima, having a similar and slightly more aggressive GT styling and more engine choices.
The particular Ultima I purchased was a professional build by Brammo Motorsports who have a good reputation on Ultima's and it was bult by the previous owner with no expense spared. I got it for about 60% of what it cost him to build and it has less than 2K miles, so that influenced my decision as well.
