The short tank is referred to in DeTomaso/Ford literature as the system tank, the pressure tank, and/or the supply tank. Take your pick.
The taller tank is referred to in DeTomaso literature as an expansion tank, which in the automotive sense is a pressurized coolant recovery tank.
The inlet & outlet of the short tank are configured as a functional de-gas tank (aka a swirl tank) except it has the cooling system’s pressure cap mounted on top instead of a continuous vent. In order for this tank to function as a de-gas tank it needs two things (1) replace the pressure cap with a continuous vent and (2) provide a header tank for it to vent into. A header tank is sometimes referred to as a surge tank. The Pantera has no header tank/surge tank as-is, but the taller tank can be easily converted into one by moving the connection of its bottom outlet from the system tank to the suction of the coolant pump.
