Tight Steering

Has anyone had any problems with "tight" steering? even with the front wheels in the air the steering wheel is far more difficult to turn that it should be. I haven't torn into it yet, but I can occasionally hear some squeaking in the steering shaft, seemingly toward the top just below the steering wheel. if anyone has pictures or diagrams on what might cause binding in the steering shaft it would be very helpful.
