Tracking down '68 Goose transaction history

Hi DeTo community, I'm in the process of helping my dad restore his 1968 Goose to its original (or closest possible) splendor and we want to try and establish the complete provenance. Modern searches are useless as the VIN contains only 6 digits, and I was wondering if anyone here in this community has had experience and/or success in tracking down their own vehicle.

I was thinking that looking into U.S. Customs records would help since the car had to be imported into the states at some point (car is currently located in North Georgia).

Any help or suggestions are greatly appreciated! Thanks yall!
