Interesting question, restoman. I don't know what the alloy is, either, but I was curious enough to google "welding magnesium", and found all sorts of information. Apparently, the preferred method of welding any magnesium alloy is TIG, and actually takes less heat than aluminum to weld. Sure would be nice to have a busted up old case to practice on

. Let me know what you find out, and if you are successful. BTW, have you ever welded titanium? I'm dying to try it, but nobody will give me any to play with. -Steve
