Weld away, Restoman. The cases are a Euro casting alloy similar to A-356, and they TIG-weld beautifully. Depending on what you're fixing, expect some case warpage. I've successfully welded up several cracked ZFs including one Mangusta case that snagged a manhole cover at 35 mph! Piecing that sucker back together was no walk in the park, and remachining the bellhousing flange flat was even less fun. But the welding went just fine, once the pieces were degreased.
