Transaxle Removal

Is it possible to remove the transaxle by itself or must it be removed with the engine as one assembly. The back of the rear mounts on the transaxle are closed off so you can not slide the unit back then lift the unit up, and I fear that just by pulling upward on the unit will cause damage to the clutch, throw out bearing, input shaft, etc... . any help would be greatly appreciated.
