Type 1 side cover bolts

I have a type 1 transaxle and heard that you should not use the bolts that kind of go diagonal from the bellhousing to the side covers. Something about breaking the side covers. Mine have always been installed. If the bolts should stay what should they be torqued to? Thanks Rich
