I think a roll bar is probably a good idea provided it is well padded like you say. I think racing harnesses without a roll bar could be a bad idea. Had I been wearing a racing harness, I don't think I would have been so fortunate. I think my 3point seat belt/shoulder strap allowed my torso to go to the relatively unaffected passenger side. All that being said, I don't feel the need to rush out and buy a roll bar for my next Pantera. I don't intend to turn the next car over, but then again, I wasn't planning to turn the last one over.
