Reply to "universal joint info pls car 3840"

Peter,

Many years ago, I ordered a set of Pantera u-joints from Powertrain Industries in Southern California. I was curious about the origin when I ordered them, so I asked the guy taking the order what they were from. He told me they were driveshaft u-joints from a 1970's Toyota 2WD pickup truck. He said that as the Toyota joints were "a thou' or two" longer than the OEM Pantera u-joints, they supply them with snap rings that are thinner by the appropriate amount.

Since then, I've heard the same thing from a number of people but I don't know of anyone who's actually bothered to confirm it. That's because Powertrain Industries doesn't increase the price because the box says "Pantera" on it, rather than "Toyota". It could be a story but it might not hurt to take an OEM u-joint and snap ring to a driveshaft shop to see if it's true.
