so the extra lenght of the cross was due to the cups not being pressed together.

too late now, but working with similair assemblies, removing the grease zerk to allow air to escape could have helped when installing. (but there would have been the "spring" of the rubber seals also)

can you share the make and part # of the ones you installed?
