I had some 12-year old Pirelli P7R's split open on me within the first 50 miles.

They looked brand new, had never been mounted, and still had the little rubber nipply things. I was fortunate in that I was going pretty slow at the time, heard a huge "BANG" and stopped to investigate. It split right between the treads.

Like the movie says, "Are you feeling lucky?" I know how I answer that question from now on...
