Prior to the smog era and the use of the dual diaphragm vacuum advance, Ford used ported vacuum advance. The only exception was the '56 & '57 Y-block with 4 bbl carb, which used a dual diaphragm vacuum advance. One diaphragm was ported, and the other was manifold vacuum.
