Reply to "Vendors - Who wants our business ?"

Mark:

I'm told that marking shipments "antique auto parts" qualifies them for an exemption from duties under NAFTA. I have asked for all my shipments to be labelled that way, and most vendors will happily comply. In this way, and by shipping USPS to an address in Alberta, I save brokerage, duties and provincial sales tax, leaving only the GST and Visa currency exchange fee to pay. Before I figured this out, I would have to take the purchase price of a part in $US and double it to get the final price in Canadian dollars. The exchange rate is better these days, which also helps.

The one thing I have never done is compare S&H charges between vendors. I suspect that some of them tack on an additional fee in addition to simply passing on their actual courier or postage cost. I remember the time I ordered a space-saver spare tire & wheel for my car from Wilkinson's, and the their S&H charge was $225US.
