Vin # ??? 72 or 73 ???

Happy new owner of vin 4295,, Still have the smile on my face. But I'v been looking around at cars with vin #'s close to mine,,, I find Bill Harris's car vin 4297 listed as a 1972 in the Detomaso scrapbook,, My paper work (REG.) for vin 4295 is listed as a 1973. How can that be????
