Jeff,

Modern fans use flat motors to keep the packaging as slim as possible. They don't have a long round motor that you can throw a clamp around like the oem fans.

Some owners use the plastic ties that poke through the radiator tubes and fasten the fans directly to the core. A drawback of this method is that the heavier a fan is (more air capacity requires a larger, heavier motor) the more likely the plastic ties will rub against a tube in the core until it eventually leaks. Mounting the fans this way positions the fan blades very close to the radiator core. To realize maximum performance from the fans, the fan blades need to be spaced about an inch off the core, so this is a second drawback to mounting the fans with the plastic ties.

Other owners install brackets across the radiator core (top to bottom) that fasten to the channel that "frames" the core across its top & bottom. Then they mount the fans to the brackets.

One big advantage of mounting the fans behind the radiator is that a shrowd can be installed, and the fans attached to the shrowd.
