water pump installation

I'm installing a Milodon aluminum HV water pump to replace the one that has been on the car for 30 years. While I was "persuading" the original pump off, I screwed up the gasket the goes between a metal plate that goes between the water pump and the block. Just slightly in one corner but I did stick a screw driver in there because I didn't know there was that plate there. Now everyone knows why I'm not a mechanic. What does that plate do and do I need the remove it and change the gasket behind it. How does the plate come off at the bottom should I end up changing a gasket behind that plate? Do I have to pull the timing pointer and maybe even the balancer? Could I just put a little RTV in the wound and go? Thanks eveyone, I couldn't do this without you guys
