Reply to "Water Pumps"

The water pump is generic 351-C, but there are two basic types depending on whether it has the warm-up passage machined in the casting or not. The stock unit is available in iron, & aluminum as an aftermarket. Type 2 (such as Weiand) doesn't have the passage machined, which means the recirculation/warm up system is inoperable and thus any thermostat will work, not just the special (and sometimes hard-to-find) 351-C unit. Note also that other aluminum pumps can be blocked off with a pipe plug in the recirculation passage, but doing this & changing to a 160 degree thermostat will not lower engine temp to that level. A few degrees lower is about all the cooling you'll get, based on my experience. Aluminum pumps are about 6 lbs less wt and take the stock pulley. A 351-W pump will not bolt up.
