What was the purpose of caliper spacers from the factory?

The factory put spacers between the calipers and the spindles on our cars. There are usually a couple of them for each caliper. What is their purpose? I am assuming that they help center the caliper on the rotor to help ensure that the brake pads wear evenly on both sides.
