The known 'soft spots' for rust are the quarter panel behind the driver's seat, both rocker panels. On some cars, the invisible backside of the unpainted gas tank, the rear suspension attach points for the a-arms (big horseshoe-shaped weldments) and the chin area below/under the radiator. The windshield lower area under the gasket tends to collect moisture & rust, sometimes perforating the body behind the dash. A 'Bondo-meter' or paint-thicness gauge is invaluable when shopping any 20-30 yr old car!
