I agree with what Mark said, "you won't lose money until you start working on it". One approach might be to buy the car that will require the least amount of money to get it the way you want it. I think if you are paying someone to do the work for you, you may be lucky to get half of your investment in upgrades back? I've done most of my work myself and I don't think I could get all of my money back and that is earning zero dollars per hour.
