Adding to what Larry said, in rare instances the left 'gill' will overlap the gasket and need to be removed. On the one '71 I found that was that way, the gill fasteners were wing-nuts so no tools were needed. Decades of paint might glue the gasket in slightly, but should not really interfere much.
