The stainless windshield trim has a short s-shaped piece protruding downward for its entire length, into an s-shaped slot in the windshield gasket. Be extremely careful in prying the ss out, as it bends easily and then won't fit correctly. Some soapy water helps; WD 40 also works, but stays in the rubber slot more-or-less forever... which probably isn't good for it. All the strips are interlocked beginning with the very short center piece in the top middle. Early cars are worst as they use chrome-plated brass trim, which is not only softer than stainless, but has one less piece so the strips are longer.
