Dennis told me that on a high milage car like mine (77K)it's not uncommon to hear the transaxle, it may be that the ring and pinion have settled in and warn together in such a way that causes the whine. Of course it does need to be rebuilt eventually but since there in no metal in the fluid, I should'nt really worry about it. He seemed to think failure was not imminent.
