ZF Window Cover is it Necessary?

So I took 4072 out today for the first time on a long ride. She has not put 50 miles on her for over 20 years. But when i came home i parked and noticed a 3 X 3 puddle of watery oil under the ZF. From the top it looked like it came out of the Bell housing window. I see on the PI parts list there is a window cover. Am I suppose to cover the opening? Is it common for liquid to come out on a long ride? Im hoping it is not a gasket but i will get under her tomorrow. Thanks in advance.
